Welcome  to the Letterkenny Lions Club website which I hope you will find informative.

Many people think the lions club is some kind of sports club to do with rugby in particular.

In fact it isn't, except maybe that it gets people together but not in a scrum!

Lions International is an association that brings together service minded people who want to serve the community where they live without personal financial reward.

The original idea was the dream of a Chicago businessman, Melvin Jones over eighty years ago. He believed local business clubs should expand their horizons from purely professional concerns and focus on the needs of the communities around them.

A few years after the first club was formed the association became international and has  continued to grow ever since.

Now there is 46,000 clubs in 193 countries around the globe with a total of 1.4million men and women all united in a bond of good fellowship and friendship.

Lions Club International Foundation

Lions Clubs have become a major force internationally through the Lions Clubs International Foundation [LCIF]. Working through Lions Clubs around the globe  LCIF helps to prevent blindness through it’s Sight First Programme , provides food and clothing for victims of national disasters. It gives youth the tools to succeed through Lions Quest, empowers the disabled through vocational training, promotes health by equipping clinics and hospitals. Other areas of involvement are provision of community parks , playgrounds and senior citizen programmes.

LCIF has awarded 356.9 million US dollars in grants since it was set up in 1968.

Letterkenny Lions Club

The Letterkenny Lions Club was chartered in 1995 and had it's first meeting in January 1996 and since it's foundation the club has raised well in excess of €100,000 . All of this money has gone back into local charities and community groups such as  Friends of Letterkenny Hospital, St Bernadette's School, Donegal MS Society, Glenwood Community Group, Donegal Hospice. To see a full list click on this link.

At Letterkenny Lions we are always willing to consider proposals from charity organisations and community groups throughout Donegal and should you wish to submit a request please forward it through our link above.

Finally I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the members of the Club who have given their time and services to help make all the projects we have been involved in a success.
